TRAVELLING PATROL

4.2 litre turbo diesel GU PATROL


Autron Auscruise Cruise Control
We fitted an Autron Auscruise cruise control which is a beauty. It's one of the best things we've done for those long bitumen drives we all have to do to get to our favourite bush area.

 

 

Piranha Dual Battery System
Under the bonnet we've fitted a Piranha Dual Battery System with one of their top-of-the-line DBE 150S-Mk11 isolators. These are designed to handle the most sophisticated electronic engine management systems along with the many extra demands we place on our vehicle's batteries including fridges, extra lights, HF radios and winches. And when adding an extra battery it's important to ensure the battery cradle is well designed to handle all the forces exerted on to it and onto the mounting points and panels - we've seen a lot break away.

 

Turbo Tune and Fuel Filter upgrade

The engine itself was originally lightly worked over by Berrima Diesel Services, which saw more power and torque with smoother running. They also fitted an adaptor to take a Lucas/CAV fuel filter with glass bowl - a better system and a cheaper replacement filter element than the standard Nissan fare.

This was good and money well spent!

 

Turbo Upgrade

Now in the quest for more power we went to Outback 4WD Centre and went on the long search for more grunt. It hasn’t been cheap and we’ve ended up modifying the turbo and adding a bigger exhaust system, that work being done by MTQ Engine systems (Aust) Pty Ltd, formally known as Dynamic Turbo Services.


Rankin Diesel Injection Service worked the pump over and replaced the injectors, which were surprisingly I thought, showing a poor spray pattern.

Now the Patrol certainly has a lot more power and torque but it hasn’t been the increase I was led to believe was possible. We’re looking at modifying the turbo a bit more (the inlet side!) as well as adding an intercooler to keep those temperatures down when it’s hot up north.

The search for reliable power doesn’t come cheap!

De-Bug Fuel Cleaner
Outback 4WD Centre in Bayswater fitted, amongst other things, a diesel bug killing De-Bug unit to keep my fuel, no matter where it comes from nice and clean. I did have problems early on with bugs in my fuel – a relatively common problem so I found out especially when filling from jerry cans, 200-litre drums and service staions way out bush. But since fitting this unit my fuel has been fine.
