COMMUNICATIONS

HF Radio Communications is pretty important for us, so apart from the UHF set we have a HF radio and a satphone, all being prescribed and fitted by Telstat Communications.

GME ElectrophoneGME Electrophone TX4400 UHF Radio

We use a GME Electrophone TX4400 UHF radio for normal car-to-car comms as well as talking short distance to station owners and the like.

HF Codan radioHF Radio - Codan NGT Transceiver
The HF radio is the incredible Codan NGT transceiver which is expensive but impressive in all the things it can do - some of them way beyond us! While the main control box is mounted behind the back seat and the big antenna is mounted via a Kaymar HF mount on the rear tyre carrier, the handpiece is ready-to-hand on the centre dash.

VKS737RadtelImportantly in this day and age, the HF is registered with both the VKS-737 Network and Radtel radphone services.

Sat phoneSatphone - Telstra Hand-held Unit & Digital and CDMA Mobile Phones
IridiumThe satphone on the other hand is a Telstra hand-held unit and we have been more than happy with it. In fact it's the best satphone we've ever used!

Satellite phones may be the go for many people, but while they are cheaper to buy than a HF radio they are expensive to operate and you can’t talk car-to-car and you don’t get free weather or road reports and the like.

Telstra Countrywide has an excellent hand-held sat phone service linked in with the Iridium network.

For expert help and information on vehicle based communication, contact Telstat, ph: (03) 9786 9422, or check our their comprehensive web site: www.telstat.com.au.

You can also check out the Iridium web site: www.iridium.com/.

CDMA phoneJust as important we have two mobile phones - one a normal digital GSM phone and a CDMA phone (both Telstra).

See you in the bush.

Ron and Viv.
