ALONG THE CANNING STOCK ROUTE
The Canning Stock Route (CSR) remains one of the great 4WD trips in Australia and we’ve just come back from travelling the whole length of it from Wiluna to Halls Creek.
We hadn’t travelled the whole route for a few years so it was great to go back and to note that little has changed out there and any signs of rubbish and vandalism were at an absolute minimum. There’s quite a few of the wells been restored, especially in the lower half of the CSR and this means getting water is easier than before.
With the fuel dump at Well 23, fuel at Kunawarritji (well 33) as well as at Billiluna the fuel situation has eased a little too, but the trip still has it challenges and is not for the faint hearted or the ill-equipped.

Raising water from Well 6. Beautiful Windich Springs. Viv and Ron with Shaun Canning (L) and Jim Canning (R) at Well 46
The rains earlier this year had made the desert look lush and there were places where we travelled through kilometres of holly grevillea forests as well as near continual blooms of wattle, mulla mulla and more. It was amazing!
Camping at Durba Gorge is delightful.
The Durba Hills were fantastic as always and the oasis like camping that Durba Gorge offers is one to be treasured and enjoyed.
The wide expanse of Lake Disappointment.
Another plus we had on this most recent trip was a flooded Lake Gregory at the top end of the stock route. Water coming down Sturt Creek had meant the shallow lake had filled and the birdlife around the shore was fantastic. We had a great camp about 75km south of Billiluna on the edge of the water, which was most enjoyable. Already though the lake is drying and the water will recede quite quickly although it will be some time before the lake is dry – hopefully it wont get to that stage before the next flood comes down Sturt Creek.
See you in the bush.
Ron and Viv.
