Kalbarri Kapers

shark bay signAs we write this we are also getting ready to head back to Broome in the far north of WA and pick up our vehicle to continue our travels across the top of Australia.

Kalbarri Fortescue River Previous to coming home for a couple of weeks we had set off to SA in our newly modified and stretched Patrol dual-cab towing a Jayco Expanda camper van (www.jayco.com.au). After two months of living with them we are pleased to say we are extremely happy with both the modified Patrol and the Jayco.

Our travels took us across the Nullabor to Coolgardie. We by-passed Perth this trip and spent a bit of time around Kalbarri and Northhampton. The coast attracts fisherman and beach lovers and the cliffs that line the coast here are pretty spectacular in anyone’s language. There’s history too dating back to when two mutineers from the doomed Batavia shipwreck were marooned on the coast near Red Bluff.

Kalbarri coast
Kalbarri pelicansThere’s a lot to enjoy just inland, including the Kalbarri National Park where the Murchison River has cut an impressive gorge. The historic town of Northhampton has some fine buildings to check out, while the Hutt River Province, where a dissident farmer proclaimed himself and his land independent from Australia back in the 1970, still holds court for passing tourists.

Sandford houseThe historic Sandford House and the nearby Convict Hiring Station all date from the 1850’s. The many buildings, which are slowly being restored, are well worth visiting and can be found just off the main road, 8km south of Port Gregory, the historic port to the area. Today the port is a pleasant fishing village, far less developed than Kalbarri, further north.convict ruins

See you in the bush.
