From South Australia to Victoria and Back Again

Over the summer break we spent a few weeks along the west coast of South Australia from Ceduna to Port Lincoln. There are some fantastic areas along here and few people outside the state … make that outside of Eyre peninsula … really know what a great coastline it is (one of the reasons we are writing a guidebook on this area – due out before the end of the year!).

We actually started our travels west of Ceduna around Pt Bell, then checked out Pt Peter and fantastic Davenport Creek – the only spot on the whole coast that actually had a few people camped alongside the water’s edge.

The great camping at Davenport Creek.

We worked our way south from there sticking to the coast. Went into Pt Drummond and Hall Bay – a place I haven’t been to since 1968 when we were spearfishing, lost all our fish to a shark when we were way out from the coast and had to swim across the bay as the sun went down!

South of Port Lincoln we spent our time exploring Lincoln NP. We’ve been coming here for ages but hadn’t really seen much more than the wild southern coast around spectacular Wanna. The glorious protected bays of the northern coastline are something else and are real delightful, especially for a family. The drive thru the dunes around Sleaford Bay is a very pleasant 4WD trip.

Back in Victoria we had a quick weekend trip up to the mountains around Walhalla. There’s some great four wheelin’ up there along with a lot of history from the early days of the gold rushes. (See ‘Bushtrack of Victoria’ guidebook for some great ideas, easy and hard, to enjoy up around there).

Googs Track; Googs Lake; the Kingoonya Pub.

Then, just a few weeks ago, it was back to SA and Ceduna where we done a quick run along Goog’s Track to the Trans Australia Railway Line before heading east to Kingoonya. The pub is open there again dispensing friendly hospitality, cool beers, hot meals and has accommodation available, ph: 08) 8672 1002.

We then spent a few days exploring the Gawler Ranges. With the recent rain the country was looking pretty good but the tracks were a bit wet which meant we had a bit of fun as we were towing a Track Topaz van at the time. Apart from exploring the national park we enjoyed trips along the Buckleboo Stock Route, Woolford Track and then had a few days enjoying Mt Ive Station (see latest Traveller’s Hot Spot).

Our next jaunts will take us north to Central Australia, the Kimberley, the Gulf and Cape York. We can hardly wait!

See you in the bush.

Ron and Viv.
