TOM GROGGIN and MT PINNABAR, NSW

FOWLERS BAY street
We've been heading to this area of north-western Victoria since the early 1970's. There is hardly any better mountain country in the whole of Australia than in this border region of Victoria and NSW, while the big advantage of Victoria is that you can drive through much of it.

Mt Pinnabar on the southern side of the border is reached by a series of 4WD tracks and those on the southern and, especially the eastern side, are very, very steep. But the views across to the Main Range in Kosciuszko National Park are unsurpassed.

Camp site beside the Murray River.

Descending from the crest to Tom Groggin and the River Murray can be exciting to say the least - especially if it is damp. You've got to stick to the main access track through the grasslands of the historic Tom Groggin property and you'll quickly end up at an old doggers hut on the banks of the Murray River. This is a top spot to camp.

Our book, Bush Tracks of Victoria, has detailed trek notes to reach Mt Pinnabar as well as other exciting spots in the immediate area.
