Delightful Yorke Peninsula – South Australia
We’ve been travelling to Yorke Peninsula for longer than we care to make public. It’s one of those places that attracts us back time and time again and it doesn’t matter whether you are a super keen surfer, a one-eyed scuba diver or just someone who wants to dangle a line to catch a fish, Yorke Peninsula has all the water sports on offer.
For those wanting to get away from it all a sandy 4WD track leads south from Port Victoria, itself an historic spot as well as a fine fishing and diving area, to Port Rickaby and then onto the small hamlet of Hardwicke Bay. There’s camping, fishing and snorkelling to enjoy along the way.
Down on the ‘toe’ of the peninsula you have some of the finest coastal scenery in Australia with the Althorpe Islands rearing steeply out of a blue sea just offshore from the equally steep and impressive Cape Spencer. The main road turns to dirt at Stenhouse Bay and takes you around to the sheltered waters of Pondalowie Bay with its fine surf beach just a stone’s throw from a well protected swimming beach.
The southern coast of Yorke Peninsula sees a lot less people than other areas and there’s some good camping to enjoy, while along the well protected east coast every small town boasts a boat ramp with fishing high on the agenda.
