Taking nearly three years from early 1884, the border of Queensland and the Northern Territory was surveyed only after much hardship and personal endeavour. From Poeppels Corner in the heart of the Simpson Desert, the border strikes north for over 1000km (651 mile) to the remote sandy shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Today much of it is still very remote country with vast areas of the northern Simpson Desert being completely untracked, while the rest is surrounded by vast pastoral holdings or large areas of Aboriginal lands, neither of which have more than a handful of people on them. For travellers following the NT/Qld border the obstacles are many and it demands intensive and extensive planning and preparation, a vast amount of experience, the best of equipment and a certain amount of luck and flexibility.

The Legendary Outback Products Expedition (LOPE) for 2004 was again made up of some of Australia’s leading 4WD aftermarket accessory companies, including TJM Products, Exclusive Tyres, Piranha Offroad Products, Autron SmarTire Monitoring Systems, Southern Cross Tents and Black Widow Storage Systems, along with 4X4 Australia magazine.

Led by well-known 4WD adventurers Ron and Viv Moon, the party left Birdsville for two weeks of strenuous endeavour and fine adventure in the desert and tropics of northern Australia. After five days of gruelling cross-country travel in the Simpson Desert, the dirt tracks and roads of outback Queensland were a transient delight before they were back into remote country pushing closer to the Gulf. Finally, the last 4km of bush that separated them from the coast took over four hours as the group resorted to axes, shovels and machetes in an endeavour to clear the ‘border line’ through the thick tangle of vegetation that had grown up since the border had been blazed so long ago.

While the modern day adventurers found a number of blazed trees marked by the initial border survey party, as well as a number of original border marker posts, the highlight was arriving at the beach where the original surveyors – Larry Wells and John Carruthers - had arrived over one hundred years before. A cairn marks the historic spot.

“While our trip was hard and exciting it was nothing compared to the hardships and extreme dangers faced by that small party of tough men back in 1884. Their trials and tribulations and their ultimate success should always be remembered”, Ron Moon said at the end of the trip.
