The Legendary Outback Products Expedition (LOPE) 2003 was the brain child of Ron Moon, who really only wanted to go bush for a few weeks so he could play in the scrub in other people's vehicles. It worked!

The idea was basically a pretty simple one: take a group of Australian 4WD accessory suppliers and their products and head bush for a few weeks and test their stuff in a wild and hostile environment and see how it stood up to the rigours of use and abuse in our Outback. And take a film crew and a magazine (4x4 Australia) along to record it for posterity!

      

The magnificent and rugged Flinders Ranges in Outback South Australia was an obvious place to test product and a great starting point, and the expedition's route followes Eyre's journey up the west side of the ranges and into the rugged range country north of the Dutchman Stern, before penetrating the mountains around Beltana and Mt Serle. From there it was onto rarely used station tracks to Mt Distance, before swinging west and tracking around the top of Lake Torrens, ending up at Roxby.

From Roxby the expedition overnighted at William Creek and then headed via station tracks along the edge of Warburton's Davenport Ranges to the ruins of The Peake OTL station. Then swinging east, the vehicles crossed the treacherous salt swamps and river systems north of Lake Eyre to Kalamurina station and on to the Birdsville Track before finishing in Birdsville.
