LOE

LEGENDARY OUTBACK 4x4 EXPEDITIONS
LOE logo

Legendary Outback Expeditions (LOE) came into being after the first Legendary Outback Products Expedition (LOPE) in 2002 had been organised and ran for the 4x4 aftermarket industry as a showcase and a testbed for their products. ARB, TJM, Cooper Tyres and others have all been part of the LOPE phenomenon. Realising that there was a requirement to bring very special expeditions to the general public, LOE was established by those who had set up LOPE, namely, Ron and Viv Moon and Karen and Anthony 'Macca' MacDonald from Red Desert Tours.

The inaugral 2004 LOE trip saw participants travel from Gulf to Gulf (Port Augusta to the Gulf of Carpentaria), while the 2005 LOE expedition criss crossed Cape York. The 2006 LOE travelled through remote Kimberley.

KALGOORLIE TO PORT LINCOLN - Nov 15th - 29th 2007

Two of the greatest exploring expeditions undertaken in Australia were the epic sojourns of Edward John Eyre across the Great Australian Bight in 1841 and the dramatic crossing of the Great Victoria Desert by Ernest Giles in 1875.

This LOE will begin in the historic and rich gold mining city of Kalgoorlie and head first to Queen Victoria Springs that was such an important discovery for Giles and his men. From there we will head south to the coast to pick up the historic places made famous by Eyre as he struggled along the barren coastline of southern Australia.

The challenges that await our expedition are many and varied as we push north along the coast from Israelite Bay. This 150km or more of beach driving will test each and everyone of us before we travel through some of the highest coastal dunes in Australia. Upon reaching the Baxter Cliffs, named after Eyre’s unlucky travelling companion, we skirt along the rugged Great Australian Bight.

Further inland we will pick up Giles’ tracks before reaching Fowlers Bay, an important point for both explorers and the many that followed them. Our expedition continues along the coast of Eyre Peninsula and its wonderful bays and craggy cliffs where we will spend some glorious nights in splendid isolation.

After swimming with the seals at Baird Bay, surely one of the best wildlife experiences to be had in Australia, we head along the beaches of Coffin Bay to remote Pt Sir Isaac where we have a couple of nights before journey’s end at Port Lincoln.
