WILDEST AFRICA - NAMIBIA, ANGOLA & ZAMBIA

Legendary Outback Expeditions is again pleased to offer you the opportunity to really spread your wings and journey to Africa for a truly amazing travel experience.

This 4WD tag-along expedition starts where all the others finish off!

Join us for this incredible 26-day tag-along expedition through what is the absolute essence of ‘wildest Africa’.

The mighty and spectaular Victoria Falls.

Our journey will start or end at Victoria Falls, Zambia, or the finest city of southern Africa, Windhoek in Namibia. Once we depart our hotel we travel into an Africa that few people are aware of, and even less have experienced. Tribal cultures, impressive scenery and abundant wildlife mixed with a touch of challenging four wheel driving will mean no day will ever be the same.

The unforgettable Etosha National Park, Namibia.

The fantastic and varied wildlife of Etosha National Park in Namibia is unforgettable and with luck you’ll not only see the 'Big Five' but also come face-to-face with one of Africa’s rarest and most elusive animals, the Black Rhino.

The towering sand dunes of the northern Namib Desert along the coast of the Iona National Park in Angola are truly impressive and reaching the sand island of Baia dos Tigres will be an interesting and challenging 4WD trip. Then amongst the sand dunes we’ll come to the Cunene River and its mouth where the surf fishing can result is some spectacular catches.

The Cunene River - it can be very spectacular.

Part of our journey will follow the Cubango River which forms the border between Namibia and Angola for much of its length, before we cross it and travel via Namibia’s Caprivi Strip to the banks of the mighty Zambezi River. Crossing into Zambia we’ll follow this mighty stream north into remote Barotseland (western Zambia), the home of the Lozi nation.

The 3-horse powered Donkey Cart, Namibia.

Then it is onto and through Kafue National Park. This park is a remote wilderness area in western Zambia with the Busanga flood plains stretching away to a distant horizon. Huge herds of antelope, some of which are rare elsewhere in Africa, swarm over the plains, which offers a prime hunting ground for the largest population of big cats in southern Africa. African hunting dogs (the rarest predator in Africa) are also relatively common here and there’s also 490 species of birds within the park.

For something entirely different we’ll have two nights on a houseboat on Kariba Dam, boarding our home on the water at Siavonga, near where the Zambezi River was dammed to form the largest man-made lake on the continent. We’ll spend the rest of that day and all the next cruising the lake game viewing, relaxing, and/or fishing. And the fishing here can be electric, while the game viewing is stunning. Back on the land and travelling between Siavonga and Livingstone we’ll have another great 4WD adventure as we journey through this remote country along the edge of the huge lake that is rarely visited by outsiders.

While we are remote from civilization for much of the time to give you the complete ‘African experience’ we’ve managed to organise some truly memorable lodges for us to enjoy in between those nights when our rooftop tents will be our only choice of nightly abode!

We’re taking just eight vehicles with us. As we need to be completely self sufficient for much of the time our support crew is extensive, well trained and equipped for every eventuality. We’ll also be taking a support vehicle and crew because any break downs will have to fixed along the way.

Trip 1 - 20th August to 26th August 2010 Windhoek (Namibia) to Livingstone (Zambia)

Trip 2 - 21st September to 16th October 2010 Livingstone (Zambia) to Windhoek (Namibia)

This tag-along trip is fully catered for and the 4x4 vehicles you'll be driving and calling home come equipped with all your camping needs, fridge and a rooftop tent. Accommoation during the 26-day trip will vary between camping out in the rooftop, or sleeping in a lodge or on a houseboat.

NB - Just a quick word on the countries we are visiting.
You’ve probably only heard bad news coming out of a couple of the countries we are visiting on this trip and the Australian Government’s Smart Traveller website probably doesn’t help either.

Namibia has been at peace for 20 years, while Zambia is fast becoming one of the great safari destinations in Africa.

Angola, which was torn by civil war for over 40 years is now at peace and looking forward to a bright future. Only its northern area around the border with the Congo remains a problem – we are not going anywhere near there! As well, South African four wheelers and fishing folk have been visiting this country for the last five years (since after the war finished) and the roads and areas where we intend to go are safe. Trust us, we’ll be playing it very safe and staying away from any areas that can cause problems (same as we do in Oz as there are places I’m sure you wouldn’t go on a dark night in this country).

Here’s part of what Lonely Planet Guides has to say about Namibia:

Wedged between the Kalahari and the South Atlantic, Namibia enjoys vast potential as one of the youngest countries in Africa. In addition to having a striking diversity of cultures and national origins, Namibia is a photographer’s dream – it boasts wild seascapes, rugged mountains, lonely deserts, stunning wildlife, colonial cities and nearly unlimited elbow room.

Here’s part of what Lonely Planet Guides say about Zambia:

If you’re out to experience the ‘real’ Africa, Zambia is that diamond in the rough. The country boasts some of the continent’s best wildlife parks ….. It’s also an angler’s dream, as fishermen hail from all over the world to try their luck on the mighty Zambezi River with the hopes of landing a toothy tigerfish … Avid birders also flock to Zambia to glimpse its fabulous diversity of birds, …...

Here’s part of what Lonely Planet Guides say about Angola:

Angola is an eye-opener – in more ways than one. Scarred painfully by years of debilitating warfare and untouched by foreign visitors since the early 1970s, the country remains remote and undiscovered ….. But, with the recent cessation of a 40-year civil conflict ushering in a prolonged period of peace and stability, opportunities for exploration are quietly opening up. For outsiders the attractions are manifold … Angola holds a lure that few other countries can match. Here in the heady heat of equatorial Africa you’ll encounter some of the continent’s most gracious people and discover many of its most closely guarded secrets.
