A half-day journey, The Gulflander often stops for an impromptu morning tea supplied by the locals and for photo opportunities at Norman River Bridge. Head off on your Outback Rail Adventure from Nowhere to Nowhere aboard the Gulflander, also fondly known to the locals as the Red Rattler. Travelling from Normanton to Croydon, a distance of 152 kilometres, through some of the most remote and inaccessible countryside on the Queensland map, you will experience the amazing outback diversity from Wetlands and Grasslands to arid Savannah country. Keep an eye out for native Australian Wildlife quenching their thirst at the waterholes. This is old gold territory with a history to match the incredible terrain. Opened in 1891 to join Normanton to the teeming Croydon goldfields, the line has never been linked to the main Queensland Rail network. cape york normanton croydon The Gulflander - Normanton / Croydon

The Savannahlander is a train journey which begins in Cairns , Australia. It is one of the great rail experiences of the world as it rattles its way from the coast, up the scenic Kuranda Range (the Kuranda scenic railway) including stops at Barron Falls and Stoney Creek, through World Heritage listed rainforests to Kuranda. It then continues on through the agricultural areas of the Atherton Tablelands then into the Gulf Savannah region - to "outback" Australia. The Savannahlander is not only a unique train trip but a great way to see the Chillagoe Caves , Cobbold Gorge and the Undara Lava Tubes.

Cape York is one of the last great wild places on Earth. Like the Congo, the Serengeti and the Amazon, it deserves the highest protection possible. It is an extraordinary environment with seamless transitions between mangroves, tropical rainforests, savannahs, wetlands - and bountiful coasts and seas. Bounded by the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics World Heritage areas, it is half the size of Britain, and nearly as big as the entire state of Victoria. cape york The Wilderness Society - Cape York Peninsula
